Chile Migration & Residency Mobility

Chile is widely considered one of the most stable and developed economies in South America. Since 2022, its immigration framework has been governed by the Migration Law (No. 21.325), which modernised the system, introduced new permit subcategories, and centralised processes under the National Migration Service (SERMIG).

1. Residency Pathways (Residencia Temporal)

Under the current law, you must generally apply for residency from outside of Chile via the SERMIG digital portal. Status changes from tourist to resident while inside the country are generally not permitted.

· Investor Visa: Designed for those injecting capital into productive activities in Chile.

o Investment Threshold: Minimum of USD 500,000.

· Employment-Sponsored Route: For individuals with a valid job contract from a Chilean-registered company.

2. Permanent Residency & Citizenship

· Permanent Residency (Residencia Definitiva): This status can be applied for after 12 or 24 months of holding a Residencia Temporal permit, depending on the specific subcategory. Permanent residency is tacitly revoked if you remain outside Chile for more than two continuous years.

· Citizenship: Naturalisation typically requires at least five years of legal residence, starting from the date you received your first Residencia Temporal stamp. The process also includes a Spanish-language interview.

3. Chile & the U.S.

Chile is a member of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. This means Chilean citizens can apply for an ESTA to travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without obtaining a traditional visa.
